I woke to find myself alone.
Under blankets of ash, at the bottom of a hole.
One floor above, the morning light shone.
Wood floors all tangled, and black like coal.

How did I get here?
Was it something I said?
And what kind of demon,
burns the floor out from under your bed?

Maybe I took it all for granted
And I haven't been my best.
Maybe I should be more sycophantic
and being selfless is just a test.

I woke to find myself in despair,
And not from the rubble or the sooty black air.
But from finding myself
without what I thought would be there.
